Bankruptcy Lawyer | Major Law Firm to Use Robotic Lawyer
Bankruptcy Lawyer . The practice of law is built on a solid foundation of precedent and staid tradition. However, if one of the largest law firms in the world has their way, that foundation may soon include robots in the form of specially designed artificial intelligence agents.
Law firm Baker & Hostetler recently announced the addition of an artificial intelligence research tool as a new resource to aid the 50 attorneys in the firm’s special bankruptcy division. Known as ROSS, the AI attorney is built upon IBM’s famed Watson cognitive computer architecture.
Cognitive computers are especially adept at taking pieces of data and drawing connections and conclusions from massive amounts of data at high speed. Cognitive computers also have the ability to ‘learn’ from the data they are presented, which can greatly expand their expertise and understanding of the data. In effect, cognitive computers ‘learn’ and expand their pool of expertise as they are given more data.
Cognitive computers such as ROSS and legal services are a match made in heaven.
Unlike databases or spreadsheets, which are arranged in neatly discernible and quantifiable rows and tables, legal documents for the most part are simply formatted text with no pattern, index, or key which can be used to easily dissect or extract specific bits of data. The technology behind ROSS doesn’t need indexes – it can simply mine up to a billion printed documents a second for pertinent information, and use that information to answer questions about the documents.
You simply ask ROSS a plain-English question and it gives you a definitive answer based on the information from thousands of legal documents it has analyzed. In addition, ROSS can monitor legal information for any possible law changes or new rulings that may affect a case, and bring those changes to the attention of the attorney handling the case. ROSS is constantly growing and evolving as more data is added to the system, meaning that the value of ROSS to the practice will steadily grow as more attorneys use the system.
Another promising bonus for Baker & Hostetler is that ROSS, the “bankruptcy lawyer” will free up more time, and more billable hours, for attorneys to simply practice law. No longer will the attorneys be required to spend endless hours plowing through thousands of pages of case documentation to glean out that one fact or one ruling that can help their client. No longer will their attorneys have to research countless other cases to root out relevant law that relates to their case. ROSS will be able to retrieve that information for them at the speed of light. Freeing attorneys from this drudgery means that they can devote more time to the nuances of their case, the detailed study of the cases most relevant to their case, and the planning of the appropriate strategies to best represent their clients.
Baker & Hostetler employs approximately 900 attorneys, making it one of the largest law firms in the world. They are also the first to publicly embrace ROSS as a powerful legal tool for their practice. ROSS Intelligence, the creators of ROSS, say other firms have employed the technology, but no other firms as of yet have gone public with that information.
This may soon change with the announcement by Baker & Hostetler. Given their reputation in the field of bankruptcy law, other major firms are almost certain to follow their example and put ROSS to work for their clients.
Meanwhile, ROSS Intelligence is currently working on plans to expand ROSS beyond bankruptcy law. The firm hopes to soon add the capability to use ROSS in many other legal fields, such as criminal law, employment law, intellectual property law, and tax law. -startfresh.com
