Bankruptcy | Spring Break on a Budget

Ahhh…it’s Spring Break time. Can I get a collective sigh for a much needed break? The sun is shining. School is out. Your Facebook feed is likely already flooded with pictures of friends and family enjoying their time on the beach, in the mountains, or in the snow. Well, you might be on a budget, but that doesn’t mean you can’t still enjoy your time off. We have some great last minute tips for enjoying Spring Break on a budget.

Spring Break in Your Backyard

Lend a Hand. Break tradition and use Spring Break to help others. Look for opportunities to rebuild homes with organizations such as Habitat for Humanity or volunteer at a local shelter.

Tour Your Town. Whether you live in a big city or a small town, spend time exploring your backyard. Visit a local tourist office or the department of tourism for your state to discover the things that aren’t to be missed.

Work for the Week. How about gaining some knowledge while everyone else is partying it up? Many companies offer short-term internships. This allows you to not only gain knowledge in your field and network, but also to pad your resume. Even if companies don’t publicize these opportunities, you can still call and ask. You may not earn money or get a good tan, but the experience and connections could prove invaluable.

Get Outside. Mother Nature is calling and she is ready to see you. Look for a good, nearby campsite to visit. Even if you don’t have all the gear you need, you can rent it from various sporting good stores. Lucky enough to live in South Florida? Head to the beach. Seriously, if you’re a Floridian, when was the last time you went?

Traveling for Spring Break

Create a Budget. Determine how much you are able to afford for Spring Break by taking an honest look at your finances. As you consider your budget, don’t forget to expect the unexpected. Just add an extra ten percent on top of what you plan on spending.

Look for Deals. Still can’t get past the fact that others are enjoying themselves in some far off location? Certain companies specialize in last minute deals and can help you find reduced rates on airfare, car rentals, and hotel rooms.

Take a Road Trip. Have a destination in mind? While flying can be costly, driving can be much less expensive. Traveling with your friends can be even less costly since you can share the cost of gas.

Pack Purposefully. Make a list of all the items you will need while you are away. Sunglasses, sunblock, sandals, and other common tourist items can be cost a lot more if you have to buy them at your destination.

Cut Food Costs. Eating meals out tends to be one of the biggest expenses when traveling. Instead of visiting restaurants when you are hungry, pack food or visit the grocery store once you arrive. Stock up on foods (and drinks) for breakfast, lunch, and snacks. You can even find dinner options at the grocery stores if you want to maximize your budget.

Dig for Discounts. Many tourist spots have discount card programs that offer various discounts for attractions, dining, and shopping. While it may seem like a big upfront investment, they can really save you money. You can also find nice discounts such as happy hour specials and sales while shopping if you look hard enough. And Groupon is another great option for local deals.

Don’t let Spring Break pass you by. Take advantage of the time and do something for yourself or for others. Even on a budget, you can still enjoy your time off and create memories that last a lifetime – without breaking the bank or worrying about bankruptcy. – blog.startfreshtoday.com
